Expense Report

Being recent college graduates without full-time jobs, money is clearly an obstacle for us. One of the first questions we get when we tell others about our plans is: How are you paying for this?? Neither of us have a lot of money, however, we have found various ways to make our travel plans affordable and realistic. We have begun to realize that many people simply do not embark on adventures like this because they think it is not financially viable. In hopes of showing those who want to travel, but are discouraged and doubtful, that travel can be affordable, we have included below a report of all our trip expenses thus far. We will continue to keep it updated as we travel!

Flights (per person)
  • Kona, Hawai'i to Honolulu, Hawai'i: $76.00
  • Honolulu, Hawai'i to Singapore: $98.00 (we used mileage from a credit card we signed up for*)
  • Singapore to Bali, Indonesia: $68.50
  • Bali to Phuket, Thailand: $77.00
  • Bangkok to Kathmandu, Nepal: $365
  • India to the USA (home!): $184.00 (we used mileage from a credit card we signed up for*)
    • Mumbai to Bangkok: $110.00
    • Bangkok to Honolulu, Hawai'i: $74.00 (taxes on ticket purchased with mileage)

Miscellaneous Pre-Trip Costs

Vaccinations
This is a list of the vaccinations recommended to us by a doctor for our specific trip to Southeast Asia. This list may vary depending on where you are traveling to.
  • Adult diphtheria and tetanus
  • Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis B
  • MMR
  • Polio
  • Typhoid
  • Varicella
  • Meningitis
  • TB test

While Sarah had already obtained all necessary vaccinations from previous trips, I needed a tetanus booster, polio booster, Typhoid, and Hepatitis A and B vaccinations. In addition, I was prescribed Malaria pills (doxycycline, which is the lowest dosage and whose only potential side effect is sensitivity to the sun) and pills for Traveler's Diarrhea if Sarah or I need them at some point during our trip. After insurance, I paid approximately $50 for all of these vaccinations!

Gear/Supplies

  • Backpack: $39.99 (Sarah already had one to use. I had a $100 gift card for REI and therefore only paid $39.99 for my backpack that was originally $139.99).
  • Shower Kit: $23.00
*Warning: While obtaining mileage through signing up for credit cards is often a great tactic and can be incredibly beneficial if done wisely, we do not encourage the misuse of this tactic. Sarah and I both have excellent credit and zero credit card debt. We do not recommend this option if you do not think you can responsibly use the credit card!
