Our Route

Sarah and I have been talking about backpacking after college for some time now, and we struggled a lot with deciding where to go. Initially, we wanted to do a RTW (Round the World) trip and hit a bunch of different places around the globe, but with our limited finances that became more and more unrealistic. We had talked about backpacking through Europe, but I had recently spent 6 months studying and traveling throughout Europe and wanted something different. In addition, Europe was a bit out of our budget range. We finally settled on backpacking through Southeast Asia, a place where we have a few established connections and where money would be a much more manageable obstacle.

On July 12th, Sarah will be joining me in my hometown of Kona, Hawai'i. After spending about a week and a half with my family, we will together fly out of Honolulu on July 23rd and begin the long journey to our first destination: Bali, Indonesia. We will stay with some of my family's good friends and do some other traveling throughout Indonesia (with our main destinations being Flores Island, Seraya, and Komodo Island).

Near the end of August, we will fly from Indonesia to Phuket, Thailand and slowly make our way north to Bangkok. From there, we will essentially travel in a counterclockwise circle through Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos, ultimately returning to Bangkok at the end.

After returning to Bangkok in early December, we will fly to Kathmandu, Nepal where Sarah has friends. We will stay there through the Christmas season and eventually make our way to India at the beginning of the new year. From there, we plan to travel to various places throughout India and aim to return to the United States some time in February! In total, our trip will last approximately 7 months (but we have not yet obtained our return tickets, so things could certainly change!).
