Travel Resources

While researching for your trip, contact people who have been to the places you plan to visit or can put you in touch with people who have. Also utilize the internet and all it has to offer! The answer to nearly any travel question you can imagine can be found on the web. :) Here are some of the travel resources and websites that have been most useful to us thus far:

Airlines
Kayak is a great website that compares many different airlines to help you find the best price to your destination.

Skyscanner is a similar website and is a great resource for comparing many different airlines from one convenient place. We have gotten some of our best deals on this website, and it is particularly good for international flights!

STA and Student Universe are specifically for students and teachers, and they sometimes offer great deals on airfare, hostels, train tickets, etc. (especially if you are flexible with your destination or dates!).

AirAsia is a fantastic budget airlines that operates in Asia and offers some deals that seem almost too good to be true!

Budget Accommodation
Hostelworld allows you to make online reservations at backpacker hostels around the world.

Tripadvisor and Yelp are great websites to use for reviews of lodging, eateries, activities, etc.

Miscellaneous
Lonely Planet Thorn Tree is a fantastic forum where fellow travelers can exchange travel advice, information, tips, etc. You can find the answer to nearly any specific travel question you may have in this forum! The Lonely Planet website in general has extensive information on each individual country, including cities to visit, attractions not to miss, and much more. The Lonely Planet books are also incredibly helpful. We purchased this one for our trip:

Lonely Planet's "Southeast Asia on a Shoestring"*

The Ultimate Travel Hacking Guide offers some good tips on how to get the best airfare and travel deals available!

*Note: Lonely Planet is a wonderful guide, but it isn't fail-proof. Specifically, we had trouble with the latest edition of "Southeast Asia on a Shoestring" when it came to prices; almost none of them were correct! But as a general guide (including maps, history, general information, etc.) it was invaluable!
